Vringo Announces partnership with Sony Ericsson

Vringo, a company that specializes in mobile videos, has announced a partnership with Sony Ericsson that will put its video ringtone app on many future Walkman phones and in the Fun and Downloads section of the SE Website. This service allows a customized video ringtone to play when a call comes in so you can just look at the video and know who is calling. How popular this becomes will have to be seen.

Award-Winning Video Ringtone Application to Be Promoted on Millions of Sony Ericsson Walkman™ Phones

NEW YORK–Jan. 22, 2009—Vringo™, the next-generation ringtone pioneer, announced today that its free video ringtone application is being pre-linked on global shipments of Sony Ericsson’s Walkman™ phones and promoted via the manufacturer’s Fun & Downloads portal, introducing Vringo to millions of new users. New Sony Ericsson owners join a thriving community of Symbian, Java and Windows Mobile users who are already experiencing Vringo’s high-quality video ringtones and VringForward™ technology, which lets users send ringtones to friends just by calling.

This partnership with Sony Ericsson, which was established when Vringo took home a prize at last year’s Sony Ericsson Content Awards, is the latest step in Vringo’s continuing push toward global availability and monetization of video ringtones. Recently, Vringo announced partnership deals with mobile carriers in Turkey and France that enable users to download the Vringo application and access content, in some cases on a paid-subscription basis.

“Our partnership with Sony Ericsson is unprecedented,” said Vringo CEO Jon Medved. “In addition to being the first social video ringtone application to be downloadable directly from Sony Ericsson phones, we’re reaching millions of Walkman users—one of the most innovative, media-hungry audiences in the world.”

Vringo’s application, which is also available for a wide variety of Symbian, Java and Windows Mobile devices via www.vringo.com, lets users create or take video, images and slideshows from virtually anywhere, including Vringo’s 4,000-clips-and-counting video ringtone library or the Web, and make them into their personal call signatures.

To access Vringo, Walkman users can find the link prominently displayed in their phone’s Web browser. By clicking the link, users will download the Vringo application to their phones and can immediately begin sharing video ringtones with their phone contacts.

W395 Yao leaked

As MWC grows closer, leaks are more abundant. This morning we got Filippa's official name, the C901. Now we have pics of Yao or as it will be named W395. This is the Walkman version of the F305 and features similar specs including 2.0MP fixed focus camera, QuadBand GSM/EDGE, and a 176x220 2.0" screen. What will differentiate this from the F305 is Walkman software and other music apps. Also look for a Cybershot/Snapshot version of this phone too.

SE slips to fifth in 2008

Sony Ericsson couldn't keep up in 2008 with the other manufactures as it slips into 5th place worldwide. 2009 is going to be critical for Sony Ericsson. Dick even said that the first half of 2009 will be tough and that the second half of 2009 should be better.

SE at Mobile World Congress 2009

Sony Ericsson will have a press conference on February 15 for the Mobile World Congress. This is usually where they announce the products they will showcase at the show which begins the next day and goes through the 19.

Sony Ericsson Q4 2008 and Full Year 2008

SE continues to lose money and sell less phones then 2007. The only good point of this mornings Q4 results is that the average handset increased from 109€ to 121€. This is thanks to more higher end phones for Q4 including the X1, C905, and W902. Sales were down from 103.4 million phones in 2007 to 96.6 million in 2008 and 2009 isn't going to get any better. The worldwide forecast includes a decrease of 5% for all mobile phone makers marking the first time they have decreased year to year in terms of phone handsets. SE says 2009 will be more focused on higher end products so hopefully they pull through with some awesome devices.

UIQ files for Bankruptcy

Well the end is official. Today UIQ filed for bankruptcy.

STOCKHOLM, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Software company UIQ, jointly owned by Sony Ericsson (6758.T)(ERICb.ST) and Motorola (MOT.N), has filed for bankruptcy in a district court in Sweden, the company's top executive said on Monday. The software developer, which is based in Sweden, began cutting staff six months ago after its owners decided to merge its software with the Symbian platform.

World number one mobile handset maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) last month finalised its acquisition of Symbian and has pledged to make the software available free of charge.

"There are no opportunities to create a new line of business in the current financial climate," UIQ Chief Executive Johan Sandberg told Reuters.

The company has around 200 employees. (Reporting by Niklas Pollard, editing by Will Waterman)
